Marrakech is situated in the central south of morocco, about 150 km from the Atlantic ocean coast and near enough to the Atlas mountains.
The antique city of Marrakech was ruled by the antique Almoravids dynasty between 1062 and 1070, by an important military leader Abu-Bak Ibn-Umar, who conquered the north of morocco and Andalus.
After a long period, of governing from different dynasties, the city was enriched by important monuments and works of art. The new Kasbah, with its imposing mosque called Kutubiyya from then on saw its courtyards frequented by poets and philosophers alike.From the XVII and the XIX centuries the city lost a lot of its commercial importance that was re-conquered only at the end of the 800. From then Marrakech started to develop with thanks to the immigration to Morocco from Atlas.
Today Marrakech has a population of almost 1.460.000 and is one of the most important cities of Morocco, giving second place after Casablanca for its commercial activity.
